I began collecting records in 2008 and what started as a hobby quickly turned into a passion. Vinyl is trendy these days, but it's not the new stuff that interests me, it's the old - the history, the magical evolution of music. Records are my gateway into the interconnecting stories of music culture. When I DJ I feel that I have an opportunity to play music that many people have never heard before.
I've always appreciated all kinds of music, but the world of vinyl got me hooked on one particular genre: Soul. What is Soul? As Kaytranada once said, soul is less of a genre and more of a feeling. Nobody can define it, but everybody knows it when they hear it. Soul music is sweat and tears, attitude and respect, romance and celebration. It's the sound of guitars and bass as well as organ and horns - not to mention handclaps and tambourines. Soul is the musical expression of Thoreau's poetic vision to "live deep and suck the marrow out of life."
I DJ a monthly event called Vinyl Night at Refined Fool Brewing Co. (every 3rd Thursday). BYOV.
